The cost they told you is about what any decent shop would charge for the job, as it takes time to get there.
Are you sure the manual asks for a check at 500 miles and then again at 5000 miles?
I owned a 2010 New Gen in the past and now a 2013 N300 and in both bikes is 7500 miles for the first check, and many people suggest doing it at 15k mls, which is what I did.
