once OBD-II came out, it was A LOT more standardised digital format. OBD-1 was an analogue version where each auto-maker had their own implementation with proprietary connector.

As with modern-day hot-rodding, it's all done in software! Don't limit yourself with a hardware scanner, you won't be able to upgrade easily. Instead, get bluetooth OBD-II dongle to attach to car: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HXGX8V6/ . Get a Wifi version if you've got iPhone.

Then you can choose from thousands of software apps that will connect to adapter and read data from auto's ECU with your phone. Very popular one is Torque Pro.

You can even get apps that let you modify ECU's maps to fine-tune. No more getting dirty crawling around under bonnet and getting sore backs! Modern hot-rodding can be done from comfort of your living-room sofa!
