I think you can bolt the old gen motor in if you obtain the front motor mounts. The guy who bought my old gen Ninjette actually did the opposite by using a new gen motor and he mentioned that the motor mounts are different there because how they mount to the engine.
And FYI... Brian Bartlow had told me that it is critical to always fill your oil to the top of the window (above the top fill line) to help preserve the bottom end. Also I confirmed that the deeper sump pick up on the new gen bolts to the old motor too, for extra insurance against oil deprivation. If you have the engine apart, make sure you do the necessary grinding for the oil mods, which give big rewards in longevity.
