Owned a tail bag before, maybe I am too stupid since I cannot tie that darn thing properly to the back seat! Wanted to get a tank bag but cancelled it off when saw how my friend's tank was scratched badly due to the magnetic part locking and scraping the paint off from the tank. The last resort and still practical is using a backpack like adouglas said for daily use. For a long journey it's a definitely no-no.
Other solution is to have a pouch bag with you. Make sure you got all your important stuff sealed in a waterproof container, put it in that bag and off you go.
