I didn't lose the sprocket, but I came in from practice at Roebling Road (fast, flowing track in Savannah with about a 3/4 mile front straight) to find the countershaft nut lying in my bellypan.
Sometimes I wonder if those "imagine what could have happened" moments are scarier than an actual crash.
The lesson here is that, if it's a racebike, it's worth your time to check everything before turning a wheel on the track.
