Good idea! Get your hands dirty working on existing engine. Can't possibly make it worse and you may even fix it! Great practice for engine swap.

Quick internet shows El250 uses same engine as ZZR250. Which appears to same as pre-gen Ninja 250. Perhaps with more friendly tune from cams, carbs, etc. External connections may be different, coolant hoses & such.
