Identifying whether a snake is poisonous is pretty easy in the US if you know what are common in your area and what to look for. One quick and easy indicator is head shape: many venomous snakes have a triangular-shaped head due to their poison glands and the difference can be pronounced. (see pic)
That being said, even if you're sure it's not poisonous, don't go handling it - they are still a wild animal. If you need to shoo it away use a stick or something.
