Never tried a N400 but I rented an R3 for a weekend. The bike looks really good because it's still new, but just like any bike the gleam will leave the paint in a couple of years.
Power wise, I couldn't really feel any difference in pick up between N300 vs R3. You might like the CBR500 better, than bike pulls off the line compared to the other 300cc bikes. Rode a 500r from Norcal to Socal a couple of times very nice.
