I'd say buy the parts bike, always good to have a donor bike, I have one and it comes in handy, trust me.

Pull the donor bike's engine, pop it in, so at least you have running bike.

Then you can do an autopsy on the dead engine. At the very least you gain the experience, and knowledge which is always a good thing.

Like I said if the top half is that bad, the bottom end isn't gonna be any better, if not worse.
