That should have been "There is only one fertile female in the hive". All of the worker bees in the hive are female, but they can't procreate, only the queen can do that. All of the bees you see every day in your yard are females. The males (drones) live only for reproduction purposes and they pretty much hang around the hive until called on to do their thing.
