They should, but the petcock should also shut off the fuel supply when the engine is off. If the float valves are leaking, inspect the needles and seats for wear, and make sure the floats can move freely. It may be worth just getting a new pair of float needles and seats. They're usually cheap. Ducatiman can give you a good source if you'd like one.
