Hey, having owned more than 40 motorized 2-wheeled vehicles, I can tell you that none is more practical and comfortable for passenger than a maxi-scooter, long trips or short jaunts.
My $2500, 2007 Burgman 650 can easily get up to triple digit speed, cruises at 80+ mph easily and still gets well over 55 mpg.
It's not everyone that can be secure enough to operate a maxi-scoot, but those who have would know they are every bit as capable as motorcycles, even for spirited riding.
Speaking of models:
If cruiser look is what you're after, then buy a cruiser.
Personally, I don't care so much about looks when carrying a passenger, passenger is always more important than looks.
