My pic there is actually a Street Triple (675), but those aren't super cheap either, I'm afraid. And I'm actually getting rid of mine, because it's just more power than I need, so it sounds like you might find it the same. Of course, the Z1000 has even more power.
It sounds like the 650/FZ6/etc is really what you're looking for. Bigger and more stable, comfy, faster, but not stupid fast and still pretty good on the gas mileage. If I wasn't so jazzed up about the 300, I'd probably be moving to the same thing for economical reasons.
Ninjaedit: my experience with the Monster is that it is just as impractical as my Streety. Faster than you need, not great gas mileage, and more expensive. They sure are perty though!
