Of course all states are different, but here in NC getting a title for a vehicle without one is easy and costs $100 for a title bond. The cops check the VIN for you as part of the process, before you have to get the bond. I'd probably want a couple hundred off the price for my extra time and effort. I've done this for a motorcycle that was given to me, and I wrote up the procedure in case any NC residents ever need to go through the process.
