Ya, the stuff I'm taking about isn't a caulk or sealer - just a lube. Just something to help it slide into place without snagging the seal. Some people like to use KY Jelly, if you have that on hand...
Unless there are major problems you should be able to get it to seal with the proper o-ring and a clean surface.
