Motorists simply don't like it here in the states, or at least here in my state. They get spooked, don't think it's fair , act revengeful and bad things happen.
I myself , try to avoid all contact with cars. I wouldnt risk putting myself into the same lane as a vehicle - you don't know how that vehicle is going to react to your action

Being on a bike is putting the rider in danger, and it had been debated ad infinitum on this forum whether lane spitting is safer or not. There are threads for that if you want to do so.

It is unlawful in NY for lane splitting and so drivers are uneducated how to react.
