Water is the only substance that increases its volume when gets solidified.
The damage due to expansion, in form of a crack, could be anywhere in the cooling system where metal is in contact with coolant/ice.
Soft parts like hoses, gaskets and seals can support that expansion with less damage.
Hence, the leak is not necessarily in the gasket between cylinders and head.
Detecting the possible area of leak in order to decide what to do is going to be difficult.
There are ways to pressurize the system without risking damaging the main bearings due to oil contamination.
Have you noticed any leak coming from the body of the coolant pump?
