I did both my headlight bulbs with the right fairing off. But it was very unpleasant, I was on my a*s most of the time. It helped me see what I was doing up there. Don't forget to switch over the rubber spacer looking thing onto the new bulb. I wasted so much time trying to figure out why everything wasn't fiting properly.
