I had a similar situation last month during a track day. Full tank, first session, I break for turn 1 and get a face full of gasoline. Fortunately it was a bit chilly out and I had the shield clamped down and the vents closed. I checked the cap, and the o-ring had rotted. I replaced it with half a roll of teflon tape and siphoned off half the tank. Got some buddies to test-tip the bike, and rode it the rest of the weekend without problems. My Ninja's race-only, so I figure adding this to the list of things to check with every oil change, and sticking to half full tank at the most, I'm pretty safe. It'd really suck for a street bike.
