A quarter of a quart of oil is what? One dollar? Maybe two bucks if one uses gee-whiz special oil? And a person rides maybe 7500 miles per year? (20k miles for 'Wolf).

You decided to rebuild an engine to save $2 to $4 per year? That doesn't make any sense.

It was a guy who reported on the smell. Guys aren't known for their keen olfactory sense. A quarter of a quart of oil use in 5k miles is in the noise: insignificant. Any smoke or smell is probably due to fueling. And it's still insignificant. A non-problem.
