Oh for sure it can be done, but I'd rather avoid it if at all possible. I wouldn't consider it with a clip style master link but with rivets I'd do it temporarily. It's done regularly on stretched bikes and with drag racing but they go through chains stupid fast to begin with. It creates a higher potential for a failure, nowhere near a guarantee.
