Years ago (mid-90s) I had a bright red Aerostich Roadcrafter suit with some additional hi-viz patches sewn to it. I was walking from the town garage to the office one morning when a young urban male walking the other way said, "Hey, Power Ranger!"
He was wearing a a ball cap sideways, baggy jeans with the crotch at his knees and the cuffs dragging on the ground, a too-big jacket pulled off his shoulders and halfway down his arms, and brand-new sneakers with laces and tongue I can only describe as "aggressively" untied.
Looking at that costume, I realized that my bright-red getup didn't look silly at all by comparison. I've never felt embarrassed by gear since.
Rock the gear and don't give a crap what anyone else thinks.
