A friend of mine cut his in half and stuck each half on his wall in his house in different spots.

Helmets aren't just designed for impacts at speed. They are designed (and tested) for impacts when being dropped from around 6ft off the ground. You can be standing up on your front porch and fall over and you'll have the same impact they test them for.

Any MSF instructor who accepts an old helmet (even a non-crashed one) shouldn't be an MSF instructor.
