To be fair, it does look like they're doing a good job... appears to be a full, or nearly full, lining, held together with kevlar thread. So they've got the multi-layer, sacrificial outer shell thing going on. That means it's a one-crash garment, but that's par for the course with these things.
This is definitely a fashion/lifestyle choice, due to cost. You're not saving a dime over dedicated leather riding pants.
Cost for altering your jeans, with pockets for armor: $193 US (149 GBP).
Cost for knee armor: $31 US
Cost for hip pads: $27 US
Grand total $251 plus the cost of jeans, whatever that is, plus about $25 shipping to the US.
Currently, the AGV Sport Willow perforated leather pants (which include armor, of course) that I wear go for $219, free shipping.
I wonder about some of their marketing. I have a hard time believing that this young woman is wearing kevlar-lined jeans.
