I own a shop, and work on motorcycle and auto components mostly, but it's not a motorcycle repair shop or anything like that. I started it from scratch with money I saved for a long time, and I worked many years in a similar (though not the same) industry.

It can be tough. So many places for the money to go out, and it never seems as many places for it to come in.

Being a business owner has advantages, but they can't be measured in dollars. If work slows down, I can work on my projects - but it doesn't pay the bills.

When it works it can work well, but there will be times when it doesn't.

I'm not sure people have an understanding of the process of opening and operating your own shop from scratch. I definitely am nowhere near a position in life where I would be able to do that. I think working at the shop gave me some insight into how ill prepared I would be to open my own. Besides, I can go back and work there!
