I have a custom led tail and I love it. It's definitely way brighter than stock, but also a little more directional I find. This can be seen when you back the bike up against the wall, the stock one tends to spray more light around.
My custom led tail has integrated signals, but I never hooked them up because I think they're dangerous. They'll only confuse people.
I personally got it because I like the strobe effect upon hitting the brakes. Strobes don't work well on incadescent bulbs like the stock tail. I use it as another visibility tool to alert traffic behind me that I'm there, to avoid rearendings.
