You almost can't tell that it's a rubber bungee cord / tarp strap from the photo.
It turned out that the tapered part was removable, so I scooched it out, use a drill press and three bits to drill two holes in it and put in some self tapping screws. Then I used the old pipe clamp to clamp the new spring ears to the pipe and hooked the springs to the pipe. It still wobbled so I cut the rubber strap and made a bushing of sorts to pull the muffler closer to the bike. It's a hack job, but only we know that. It doesn't look horrid if you don't study it.

20$ muffler, 24 in shipping, and it's installed. Much quieter that the nearly straight pipe that was on there. I no longer rattle windows was I pass by. I do notice a small decrease in power and I'm still popping, but less, so running a bit rich still. I'll have to see if I can tune the air intakes to lean it out a bit.
