Thanks for the handy guide...turns out I was doing it right all along and the ones on the underside came out no problem, as they should.
The reason I had difficulty/was unsure I was doing it right was because 4 of them were inserted where there should have been screws into wellnuts... So these were sticking into wellnuts and even after popping in were impossible to pull out without breaking them.
