Gear is your last line of defense, make a point in never putting yourself in a situation in which you must use it.
1) Enter each turn slowly, leave accelerating.

3) Use some brake to slowdown while straighten the bike up if you must.
4) If you can, look farther, lean more and trust your tires.

Yes. I've gone in t-shirt/shorts a couple times, because I was just going a couple miles down the road to get groceries/gas...BUT I would ride like a grandma and very cautiously.
