From what I can see online, it looks like the '86 uses a very similar shock (a lot like the EX500 design, with threaded preload adjuster) and it says the length is about the same. If it were me, I'd try it.
My understanding is that the 300 uses the same shock as the NewGen, possibly with slightly different valving inside. Either one should work the same for a swap.
