My ol' 2005 runs great whether keeping the RPM low, or getting into the powerband. I often short shift it when I'm not in a hurry to accelerate, and there is no detonation or any other sign of unhappiness. I just don't expect stellar acceleration down around 3,000-4,000 rpm.
Just use common sense, and pay attention to the sounds of your engine.
