Diodes are easy to check. Many meters have a diode test setting, and the diode should pass current one way but not the other when you switch the meter leads.
Without a meter, you can test a diode with a low power 12v test lamp and a 12v battery. The diode should pass current one way and light the bulb, but not the other way.
