Cracking it open is the best best unless you have a good eye when you're doing your valve adjustment and measuring then.

I never ended up doing anything. 12,000+ miles later the sound hasn't gotten worse. I thoughy maybe I was just overreacting/ maybe noise from clutch.
I've been wondering though what the service limit was for the can chain, I went through the service manual and I have a cyclepedia subscription, and neither one mention a service limit measurement for the cam chain.
I was hoping I could find the service limit numbers for the cam chain and take a pin to pin measurement next time I do a valve adjustment
