Weird I have had clips only since 1968 and never had one come off. Maybe it is something about putting them on? I get everything lined up flat in the grooves and snick it in with a pair of slipjoint pliers between the pin and the back of the clip. That minimizes any stretching and zero twist.
I also clean the chain in situ so they generally only get used once
