Not to tell anyone what to do with his or her own safety, but I've used clip type master links for many tens of thousands of miles and never had one give me any trouble. With an O-ring or X-ring chain, you do have to squeeze the link together and make sure the clip is really seated in the grooves properly. These days I usually do this to them with some good adhesive like 3M weather strip adhesive, although in the past I've used them without it:
