If the built-in by-pass works properly, the pump will force the oil through the central tube-spring-ball, supplying the same pressure to the bearings.

However, that supplied oil will be dirty (not going through the paper cartridge), which is the second worse thing that can happen to the bearings and other frictional parts.

This case is very strange, because it is a new engine with proper oil in it.
