I don't think I've ever heard of them causing a crash, but the tar strips that go in the direction of travel definitely cause slippage. I've played with it on the ride home and experimented. The rear slips right across them. If one were leaned at max, hypothetically, and hit a wide tar strip, it seems it could eat up that last percentage of traction. Stay loose, y'all, and let the bike do its thing.
