If I was going to go bigger I would probably go for the likes of the Ninja 650 or FZ/MT-07 rather than a super sports 600 as I do a lot of inter-provincial riding and need a slightly less racy riding position and more compliant suspension.
I like the 300's as they are cheaper to run and purchase plus it's great fun to thrash the be-jesus out of a small bike!
It's a pity they stopped making the 400cc fours in the mid nineties as I believe they were the ideal size. I had a GSXR400 for a while and loved it.
