Yes, today's modern world is more flash and looks than ever.
Just like those house-flipping TV shows, they just do skin-job that makes things look good. But the underlying structures aren't even repaired or upgraded. Leaky roof, leaky plumbing, heater & AC that doesn't work, cracked foundation, pfft... who cares as long as it looks good!
You end up with a nice-looking piece, but no go. A beat-up ratty racer with upgraded suspension and brakes will run rings around that thing. I know what I'd want to ride.
