Sounds like the battery just gave up to me too. If you are getting 12.0V you are only at 50% charged. 100% is about 12.7V. Doesn't seem like much difference, but it is.
At times a Tender will show "Full Charge" and the battery may even show 12.7V, but as soon as there's a load (hitting the button) it will drop off to nothing.
That sounds like what yours is doing.
