As a guy who rides a 10-year-old R6 on the track...

If you like R6s ("R6-es", not the dumbed-down "S" models), then you'll like the new bike. Feels very much the same. It's definitely not an all-new platform... more of an update.

Yamaha really got the bike right in 2006. The did an update in 08 and wisely just left it alone ever since. It's still an awesome track bike after all these years. I think this new iteration is in part to get in line with the advancements in electronics that we're seeing from the competition, and to update the styling. But mostly it's to silence the legions of R6 fans who have been calling for an update for years now.

Personally I think they did the right thing. Ain't broke, don't fix. But having said that, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see them put the triple from the FZ-09 in this bike in years to come, now that everyone else is moving away from the 600-cc niche.
