My just-retired street lid was a Schuberth S2. There's an integrated system made for that helmet, built into the neck roll. I was disappointed with it and returned it, partly because putting the electronics into the neck roll didn't work out very well, but also because the volume just wasn't enough to let me hear the podcasts I like to listen to while riding.
I've been using the G9X for years with Hearos Xtreme ear plugs without much issue. Normally I keep the volume a few clicks below max while riding on surface streets with the automatic gain control set to the "high" setting. On the freeway I'll have to max the volume out, and the audio is by no means PERFECT, but I can still make out what I'm listening to with music. Soft podcasts may be impossible to listen to on the freeway though. My riding has been done with an RF1100 and X12.
