For example, wiring a piezoresistive pressure sensor ($2.50), having a computer convert the resistance to PSI and display the results on a screen should be a lot cheaper and more exact than any mechanical device could possibly dream to be (caveat: the little bastards also react to temperature, so one needs to include a temperature sensor, too). The drawback is that it requires time and brains to figure out how to do right.
In short: keep pantyhose on.
