Make sure it is at least paved with no loose gravel and small stones. We have none like that here. I normally took the back roads to and from my gf's house when I first got my bike. Then as I got better confidence I took the main streets. Still, parking lots help. I usually have a road by a warehouse that ends at a dead end with a cul de sac. I go there to mess around and sharpen up.
