Im pretty convinced it was the handlebara snapping sideways that broke the thumb. A damper wiuld have slowed down the handlebars. Or.. using the rear brake instead certainly would have helped.

But my main thought is you normally think about steering dampers to stop tank slappers on the pavement. I had never given them a thought for when you go into the grass for whatever reason, and that the bars can break a thumb *before* you fall off the bike.
