I usually kneel down then hold the front brake with my right hand and pull the bike off the sidestand until I feel it balance. Left hand is on the seat. You can control the bike easily, and set it back on the sidestand at any time.
Holding the front brake guarantees it's not going to roll forward and flip up the stand.
It's nowhere near as sketchy as taking a bike off of a rear stand by yourself IMO.
