After thinking about this all night and this morning I think the tidbit that I learned is that I need to make sure my foot is off the peg before the bike is stopped completely. And at the mean time I have to do a whole body turn-around to see behind me every time I'm scooting over to the lane to the left of me until my replacement mirror shows up.
