Hopefully costs will go down soon to get some good practice in on that other collection.... but the current administration has certainly effected the affordabilty/availability at the moment.
Yeah, that doesn't sound right about the mini=ball mount. It shouldn't move at all. I really can't make it out well in the pic, but to me it looks backwards.... the cradle shouldn't have a quick-disconnect from the arm. Edit: I just saw you aren't using a cradle, at least not in the same way I did.... perhaps that would be the solution.
