Actually that is how it is in California law as well. The vehicle code only refers vaguely to "lane-sharing." Although, there is currently a campaign by the highway patrol referencing lane splitting as legal. We will see if it ever gets written down as expressly legal in the law.

Back to topic, I also give a small wave if they give me room to pass during rush hour, unless I find myself busy, then I do not wave.
