(moral) performance modification: Wolo horns

(moe from the simpsons voice) so here's the 411

this is a retrospective look at my most favorite aesthetic modification.

one of the things the japanese motorcycle hoodlums get right imo is having comically loud airhorns on your bike.

if you don't want to wade through my comedy stylings to see pics: here is an imgur post with pictures and color commentary.

otherwise:

reasons to airhorn

1. airhorns rule
2. the airhorn look doesn't fit into any kind of motorcyclist category like "its a scrambler!" "its a cafe racer!" you can say "its a lunatic with a half-dozen airhorns on the back of the bike" i guess, but this is not a well explored way of being
3. in practice a wide variety of people are delighted by the sonorous honking
3a. others are annoyed but because i am morally compromised this amuses me

so how do u do it

the wolo kit comes with a compressor, a relay, horns, fittings, and reasonably detailed instructions. my excellent art car / car guy friend gave me more help than i deserved, which meant not having to buy 800 spools of differently colored/gauged wire etc. anyway there's a relay tucked under my seat, an extra 20a fuse going to the relay, and the whole compressor/relay situation is wired into the stock horn button. this means that my conventional horn sound is now real loud, but whatever. the stock horn is still there in case i sell this thing and someone isn't prepared to take on the responsibility of airhorns, or i decide to put the horns on something else etc

horns got mounted on the handhold in the rear + a couple pieces of angle so the horns sit in a nice arc.

the horns have been on for a couple years now with no ill effect, although writing this out reminds me that it's time to oil the horn compressor so i'll go do that.
